Genetic Epidemiology and Multiple Sclerosis Research at McGill University

Our research is focused on understanding the underlying mechanisms of multiple sclerosis (MS) susceptibility and progression, with an emphasis on complex genetics. By identifying genetic and environmental factors that contribute to MS, we aim to discover interventions that can prevent the onset of MS and uncover new pathways for treating its progression. Our lab employs a combination of genomics, bioinformatics, and epidemiology, utilizing large international cohorts and biobanks. We also apply these approaches to other neuroinflammatory disorders, both common and rare.
Principal Investigator
Adil Harroud is a staff neurologist and researcher at the Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital, McGill University, specializing in the care of individuals with MS and other neuroinflammatory disorders. He completed a research fellowship in genetics at the University of California, San Francisco, under the supervision of Professor Sergio Baranzini and co-advised by Stephen Sawcer from the University of Cambridge. During his fellowship, he led pioneering work that established a genetic basis for MS severity and identified the first genetic modifier of disease course (paper). His research has been published in journals such as Nature, Science, Brain, and Neurology, and has received coverage from major news outlets including CTV News, The Guardian, France 24, and El País.
